The house at 2140 Upas Street is an excellent example of 1926 vintage English Tudor style. The house is a notable example of the works of Master Designer/Builders Ralph Hurlburt and Charles Tifal, who designed and built the house for The George Hawley Investment Company. The house may also be significant for its association with Medal of Honor winner Admiral Richard O'Kane, U.S. Navy, whose 1944 exploits on the submarine U.S.S. Tang earned the recognition of President Harry Truman in 1946 and became the subject of several books and movies in recent years.
Legacy 106, Inc. proposes The George Hawley Investment Company retained Hurlburt and Tifal to erect this English Tudor style house as a marketing tool to draw buyers to other North Park lots, as the company retained and rented the house for over a decade. Similar real estate marketing schemes of the 1920s used English Tudor style houses to market lots in Normal Heights, Kensington, Mission Hills, South Park and even as far north as Del Mar and Encinitas.
